Day 3 – Yanshan Petrochemical

In the afternoon, the MBA group visited Beijing Yanshan Petrochemical (BYPC) plant, located 50 km southwest of Beijing. The huge Yanshan campus employs and houses its 15,800 employees onsite. At a size of 40 km squared, the massive campus is larger than the island of Macau, and includes 4 oil refineries, 2 R&D facilities, a simulation and training facility, and housing and entertainment facilities for its families. Yanshan is a subsidiary of Sinopec, the state-owned Chinese oil company that recently invested $4.65 billion into the Alberta Oil Sands.

Mr Wong, head of BYPC, personally hosted our group through an introduction, Q&A, and tour through the campus. Mr Wong emphasized how far BYPC had progressed in recent years in terms of environmental stewardship. In particular, BYPC has made huge improvements in terms of reducing the amount of harmful sulpher in refined oil and also in its wastewater treatment technology.
